Greetings from Herons' Reach Golf Resort
Herons' Reach - Director of Golf

Hatcher bags the hat-trick!

Last weekend saw the main event of the year, our Club Championship. This was played over 2 rounds, on the Saturday and Sunday and the blustery winds made for difficult conditions over the weekend. Though it didn't seem that way in the Ladies section, with Lady Captain Dana Dickens having an incredible nett score of 61, making a near unassailable lead going into round 2. However, 2nd day nerves played it part in Dana's round, but she held off stiff competition in the shape of Anita McAleese, who shot a nett 68 on the 2nd day to finish 2 shots behind the worthy winner overall, Dana. Dana has also reduced her handicap by an incredible 10 shots in the past 3 weeks. I think she is definitely in line to retain her 'Most Improved Golfer' accolade this year too! The gross competition ended up just as close, with Louise O'Keeffe coming out on top as our Ladies Club Champion, beating Carolyn Coleman to the title by just one shot!

In the Mens Section, it ended even closer with the gross competition coming down to our first ever sudden death playoff between Andy Baird and Justin Hatcher, who were tied at gross 155 over 2 rounds. They went back down the 18th hole (pictured below), where Justins' superb pitch into the 18th green span back to around 20 feet, and 2 putts later became Club Champion for an unprecedented 3rd time in a row! A fantastic show of consistency, and unfortunately Justin you do not get to keep the trophy like the World Cup!! The nett competition was closely fought to with 12 members finishing within 3 shots of eventual winner Steve Johnson with a score of nett 141 (-3) over both rounds.

The presentation was made by Club Captain Chris Prewett, and he would like thank all of the members who stayed for the presentation, and congratulate all of the winners over the 2 days. Full results can be found on the members board or on www.howdidido.co.uk

Six Hole Shootout Results

As you may have seen from previous newsletters, we had our inaugural Six Hole Shootout which was run by resident PGA Professional Sam Mellor. In total there were 9 teams who took part in the event, which was to raise awareness of slow play and to show members a different way of playing the game. The format was best 2 stableford scores from 3 to count and they had to complete the first 6 holes in 52 minutes or less. For every minute they were over, once finished, an extra point was added on to their score. We saw a fair few members sprinting down the 6th fairway to try and get into the allotted time frame!

Everyone enjoyed the experience and there was some food and a few drinks put out too, during the presentation. We will be running another one in the near future, so if any member is interested in playing, then please contact us. The eventual winners were Carol Barker, Martin Barker and Pete Zisenis who amassed 39 points inside the alotted time frame. Steve Richardson won the longest drive and nearest the pin on the night! The quickest time was achieved by Danny O'Connell, John Cardwell and Andy Miller who scored 37 points in just 46 minutes!
