Sean's Blog
A quick word from Sean our head green keeper on the start of the course winter maintenance program:
'Our winter maintenance programme has started and has so far taken three different forms:
1. Reshaping of the greenside bunkers on the tenth hole
2. Clearing out of reeds from lakes
3. Coring of greens
The reshaping of the greenside bunkers on the tenth has been completed however the weather has hampered our efforts to topsoil and re-turf the area. As soon as we get some favourable weather this will be completed.
Some of you may have noticed over the last week or so we have been clearing some of our lakes of over grown reeds, more specifically the 2nd hole on the fairway side and the 9th hole in front of the ladies' tee box. Although we try to keep disruption to a minimum it was essential that we closed the hole or moved the tees for a short while; we thank you for your patience during this and we will endeavour to keep these disruptions to a minimum over the coming weeks. More clearance plans of the reeds to follow in due course.
This week we have cored all 20 greens (including chipping and putting greens), I know this is something that all golfers loathe but unfortunately to get the greens as good as we have had them this year; it is essential we open the greens up and aerate them after a long season with a high volume of golfers walking across them in the months since the start of April. Naturally we will encounter disease and thatch levels at this time of year hence the reason for coring, should we get a good window of clear weather we hope to top dress and to assist in the recovery. In the mean time we thank you for your patience as always.
