This week sees us take a look at how Kevin Kisner bounced back from disappointment at the WGC Match Play, explain (with an example) why you should never jump the gun with your playing partner, and we have a brilliant Video of the Week as some of the game's best golfers attempt to recreate a Monty special.

We had a nice day of weather for the Captains Farewell and a really good turnout which was good to see. Thank you to John Cross for his efforts during his year and all the best for the future.

You will all know by now that this year we have a Men’s and Ladies Captains, so we would like to wish Steve and Louise O’Keefe all the best for this year and hope all the members support them in any events that they run.

Members Away Day 2019

This year’s member’s away day is going to be at the British Masters Tour Event at Hillside Golf Club on Thursday the 9th May. This event is hosted Tommy Fleetwood and is sure to be a great event and a great day out.

The total cost will be £40 per person to include your ticket and transport to and from the venue. If you are interested in this then please register in the golf shop. A £20 non-refundable deposit will be required at point of booking and this is very much on a first come first serve basis as we only have 22 places available.

Masters Competition

We are running a Members Masters Competition this year, this will be on the Sunday 14th April to coincide with the last round of the Masters tournament.

This will be an 18 hole Stableford with tee times starting at 3:25pm; £5.00 per person. Prior to your round you will draw a player at random. Your score combined with the players score will make your team score.

E.G if you score 36 points and your pro is Rory Mcilroy scores 72 which is level par your team scores 72 points.

Coaching Classes

With Easter round the corner Jake is running some classes for the juniors, 2 hours of fun for only £10. So if you have children or grandchildren and are looking for ideas for things to do over the holidays then why not speak to Jake.

The Seniors classes are going to start again on Tuesday the 16th April at 11:00am, 4 weeks for only £40 including golf balls. Register in the golf shop.

Lots of new stock has arrived in the last week, clothing, shoes, golf bags and clubs and the shop is looking quite full. So come on down and have a look round and feel free to use both your members discount and any vouchers you may have to make a purchase.

Running on empty?

If your electric trolley is struggling to make it round 18 holes then it might be time you upgraded its battery. There's been a huge push towards Lithium batteries in recent years as they last longer, charge quicker and are more lightweight than previous Lead Acid equivalents. So, if it's time you change your electric trolley battery, bring your old one in-store and enjoy £25 OFF a brand-new Lithium one.

Rules news

Sergio gets some lip...

If you ever needed a lesson in not jumping the gun and sticking to the rules, Sergio Garcia showed us all what not to do over the weekend.

Playing against Matt Kuchar in the quarter-final of the WGC Match Play Championship, the Spaniard's makeable putt to win the 7th hole finished inches wide of the mark.

But rather than waiting for Kuchar to concede the putt, Garcia took matters into his own hands and it didn't end well. Watch this video to see what happened.

If at first you don’t succeed…

12-months ago, American Kevin Kisner woke up on the Monday after the WGC Match Play Championship nursing the disappointment of a thumping 7&6 final round loss to Bubba Watson.

However, this Monday, the mood in the Kisner camp was quite different after the 35-year-old overcame fellow American Matt Kuchar 3&2 to win his first WGC title and stake a major claim for a Ryder Cup berth ahead of next year's contest at Whistling Straits.

Victories over Tony Finau, Keith Mitchell, Ian Poulter (in a playoff), Haotong Li, Louis Oosthuizen and Francesco Molinari proved Kisner has the ability to go toe-to-toe with the world's elite - maybe he should have been at Le Golf National last year? The wonders of hindsight.

A world-first at the Jordan Mixed Open...

This week sees the start of a revolutionary new tournament, where 40 players from each of the Ladies European Tour, Challenge Tour and StaySure Tour (over 50s) will compete against each other for one trophy and the same prize fund.

The likes of Carly Booth, Jarmo Sandelin and Phillip Price will tee it up over three rounds in a tournament that is sure to snatch the headlines. Keep an eye on next week's newsletter for our report.

Make your putting fun

Have you ever found yourself on the green with an outside shot of birdie, only to go and three-putt? Yep, we’ve all done it, however, if the thought of heading to the practice green hardly fills you with excitement, why not try a putting game to increase the fun?

1st one in wins

Ramp up the pressure with a playing partner on the practice green with a game of first one in wins. The premise is simple:

Pick two holes that are 10-foot apart
You and a playing partner stand at opposite ends (as per the picture above)
Hit putts at the same time to the other hole
Every putt that is holed is worth one point
First to three points wins

You will be amazed at how quickly you dial your putts in under pressure. Just remember, if you’re the winner, make sure you get your playing partner to treat you to a drink in the clubhouse after your round.

Spotlight: Callaway Apex (2019) irons

Irons usually get updated every couple of years, so why did it take Callaway over three years to bring a new Apex iron model to market? Well, quite simply, the Apex CF16 was a brilliant iron that took a while to improve upon.
