Tip of the week – are you using the right equipment? With this lovely weather we have been having the course has really dried out and got quite hard underfoot. This means the ball runs more on the fairways, but also takes longer to stop on the greens, so now is a good time to switch to a softer ball to gain maximum backspin. We can advise you in the shop as to the most suitable ball to try. Don’t assume you need a Titleist Pro V1! The new Tour Soft ball is an excellent ball at a good price. It is also worth checking the grooves on your wedges. The difference in stopping distances with a wedge that has played 30 rounds of golf and a new wedge can be as much as 12 foot, but once that wedge has played 100 rounds that goes up to 15 foot which can make a massive difference. These figures are based on full shots, so after 75 rounds the performance of all mainstream wedges drops off, so based on that you can work out when you should be looking at changing your wedges. Make sure that when trying to stop the ball that you don’t just focus on height because height and spin can be different and technique wise you can scoop the ball up to get height, but it does not have enough spin. I hope this helps you all to understand better the balance between the ball, the wedge and your technique. For more help pop in and see us or click here.
