Sunday Fun Day!

Starting on the 22nd October, Steve O’Keeffe has agreed to run some “fun” competitions on Sunday mornings. The format will be as follows;

• Those intending to play to meet in the Victory Pub at 9:30am with a random draw taking place at 9:45am.
• £3 to enter – all prizes paid after the round.
• Tee times booked 10-11 on each of the dates.
  

All comps open to men & women and drawn out on the day. Full handicaps apply. Please see below for proposed dates (Subject to change):

White tees and course maintenance

As of Monday 9th October all competitions will be played from the yellow tees and the white tee’s will be taken off the course to allow the areas to recover. We will endeavour to keep the course playing as long as possible off the yellow tees until we have to move on to full winter tees.

May I also take this opportunity to ask that all members replace divots and repair pitch marks at all times, this will help the course over the winter and it only takes a few seconds!

I would also ask that ALL members strictly avoid all roped off areas to allow them to recover! This means no ducking under ropes and pushing your trolley to the next tee. These are just a couple of simple things that will make a big difference going in to next season.

Fixing that fade or slice!

One of the most common bad shots in golf is the fade or slice and it is also one of the hardest things to put right.

So what causes it and how do you improve it?

A fade or slice is caused by the club swinging down on an out to in swing path, normally caused by the upper body working too early from the top of the backswing in an attempt to generate distance.

So try this unusual tip:

Swing to the top of your backswing and stop, then try to drop the club out of your hands to let it fall to the ground, you are trying to get the club to fall behind you. If it falls in front of you it means you are turning your shoulders first which is wrong. If you can get it to drop behind you then that is the right move. This is quite difficult to do and will take time and patience to achieve.

Jake will again be running his junior lessons but with a structure in place to enable both the kids and parents to chart the progress they make as they go along. He will be using the Golf Foundation junior passport system to help the kids enjoy as they learn. It's a 4 week course for £30 (per person) starting Saturday 7th October at 10am.

The first man to ever do this...

It was very much a case of ‘by how many’ for Tyrrell Hatton on Sunday afternoon as he headed into the final round of the Dunhill Links Championship with a five-shot cushion. The Englishman finished his round with a 24-under-par total to successfully defend the tournament he won a year earlier, the first golfer to ever achieve the feat.

With the Dunhill taking place across St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, it’s a great opportunity to see who copes best with the unique challenge that links golf presents. On Friday, Tommy Fleetwood took apart Carnoustie to shoot a course-record 63, meaning  he possessed course records at two of the three courses at that point in time. That was until Ross Fisher’s Sunday exploits at St Andrews, which saw him post a new record with an 11-under 61 after a three-putt par at the infamous 18th.

Fleetwood will certainly head into next year’s Open Championship at Carnoustie with positive thoughts, whilst links golf clearly brings out the best in Hatton’s game. Maybe we'll see an English name on the Claret Jug for the first time in over 25 years next July….
