Dates For Your Diary - Captain's Day

As you were aware the great British weather put a stop to Captain's Day earlier this month. This has now been re-arranged for Saturday 5th August. Let's hope the weather is kind to us!

FREE Coaching

Throughout the month of July, Jon Haines & Jake Dudley will be running a series of FREE coaching sessions on the driving range. Each mini coaching session will last 10 minutes and is the ideal opportunity for you to fix one or two things if needed.

The dates are as follows;
- 5th July 4:00pm - 7:00pm
- 9th July 4:00pm - 7:00pm
- 21st July 4:00pm - 7:00pm

Open Qualifying

Some of you may know that this week was Open Qualifying week. Our Director of Golf, Richard Bowman, & Assistant Professional, Jake Dudley, were competing at Fairhaven on Tuesday to try and make it through to the final round, unfortunately both narrowly missed the cut carding rounds of 4 over par, with only the top six progressing.

A great effort, there is always next year.

Have Your Say...

There has been a members' focus group created which will meet once a month to discuss a number of topics ranging from the golf course to members' competitions and events. If you have any feedback for anything please speak to the members representatives who will bring the discussion to the meetings. Your representatives are the Lady Captain, Carolyn Coleman, Bob Hutchinson (Handicap team captain) and Allen Artis (Seniors Team captain).

The first meeting was on 27th June, a number of on course points were discussed, to which the greenkeeping team are already on with. Areas on left and right of the 3rd have been addressed, the mounds in front of the 5th green will be flail mowed down next week, a cut band has been put in on the left of 7, the left of 9 and 10 is currently being flail mowed and removed as well as reinstating the GUR on the right of 9.

A band has been flailed on the left of 18 from beyond the fairway bunkers up to the green. Finally, the greenside bunker on the right of 18 is under repair. All this will take time to fully complete and bed in, so thank you in advance for your patience.

We would like to remind all members that if you decide not to play golf, then you must cancel your tee time to allow others to have access. This can be done online, by phone or in person. There is a number of instances where members are not turning up at all. We will monitor this closely over the coming weeks and if there is no improvement, then we will have to introduce a traffic light system of warnings for the individuals.

Tip of the week

Pros Tip - Greenside Chipping

Playing a short greenside chip can be challenging at the best of times, but leave yourself the wrong side of the hole and it could spell disaster! This week our resident teaching professional, Jon Haines, gives us an insight on which shot to play and when.

Chipping over hazards;
If you are left with a shot around the green the chances are you will be faced with the prospect of going over a bunker, a mound or thick rough. Here's a few tips to make this shot a little less daunting.

1. Keep your weight on your front foot throughout the swing. Weight distribution being 60% on your front foot and 40% on your back foot.
2. Equal length back swing and follow through to ensure you complete the shot.
3. Slightly increased down swing speed to ensure a good quality of strike.

And most importantly... Do not look to see where it's gone!

Tour news

Moral of the story? Never give up

It most likely went under the radar for many of you but last weekend saw the Amateur Championship take place at both Royal St George's and Princes. Not only does the winner join a stellar list of past champions including Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal and more recently Matteo Manassero, but they also secure a place at that year's Open Championship as well as the following year's US Open and Masters Tournament.

After 18 holes stroke play at both Royal St George's and Princes, 288 of the world's best amateurs were whittled down to just 64, going on to compete in match play golf at Royal St George's until only one remained.

The 36-hole final was fiercely competitive with no golfer able to build more than a one-hole lead over the opening 18 holes. The second 18 was a different story, with Australian Dylan Perry winning four holes in a five-hole stretch to find himself 4up with just nine holes remaining. With one hand on the trophy, Perry's grip started to slip as he lost four of the final five holes to finish the match A/S, eventually going on to lose at the 38th hole to Englishman Harry Ellis - an outcome which seemed highly unlikely a couple of hours prior.
