Captains Challenge 2016

Friday saw the Annual Captains' Select (Allen Artis) vs Senior Captains' Select (Dennis McCullough). Seven pairs from each side did battle to take home the trophy; very kindly donated some years ago by founder member Alan Lees.

We will get onto the result later but as Allen Artis said in his speech after the game, "it was great to see both men's and senior's section get together and enjoy each others company and its great to see and play with people that you wouldn't normally." The 7 matches were all played with a great spirit and aside from a couple of big wins, one for either side, the games were largely close affairs. It was however Allen and his team that managed to edge the Seniors' out 4 points to 3 and retain the trophy won by Chris Prewett and his team the previous year.

A few highlights included a 6 and 4 win for Captain Allen Artis and Alan Lees against Seniors' Captain Dennis McCullough and Ross Gardner, anyone who was within ear shot or has seen Alan Lees recently will already know about his 2 on the 8th hole and if you haven't I am sure you will very soon! A great win for the Captains' team in the first match out.

Unfortunately that was quickly cancelled out with the Seniors' team secret weapon Gary Bremner and Mike Whiteoak obliterating Steve Whittaker and Craig Read 5 and 4 to level the scores. Unfortunately for Gary to go with his bad back with carrying Mike around for 14 holes; he has now put himself firmly on the Handicap Secretary's radar.

The rest of the games were nip and tuck with points won and lost on the final hole (ask Rob White about his 3 putt) but it was ultimately the final pairing for the Captains' team Andy Miller and John Astbury who managed to overcome a valiant effort from Seniors' stalwarts Bernard O'Brian and Keith Shuck taking the spoils on the 17th hole.

Well done Allen and his team!!

October Weather

Whilst the Autumn October weather so far has been fantastic, as we all know, the great British weather can turn in a heartbeat!! It is forecast a wet weekend, so this is just a reminder about the Winter policies that will be in place once it does happen.

The "white" competition tees will come in after this Saturdays competition (15th Oct) with the Yellow tees staying out for now. More details will follow once we go to the Winter tees.

Please be aware of signs in the pro shop, directing you as to whether the conditions are "preferred lies" or "pick and place". This will enable you to enjoy your game under the correct conditions.

Whilst the weather is good and we still have buggies out, please have your Winter "hedgehog" wheels to hand. As always, we will try and inform you at the earliest we can. This could be days, it could be weeks, but be at the ready!! For those of you who aren't aware of our policies or need to purchase Winter wheels for your trolley, then please pop into the pro shop where we can instruct you on what is best for your trolley.

** Club notice - please be aware that the hotel is re-laying a new driveway, leading from the main road up to the hotel. This will take place between Wednesday 12th and Friday 14th October. Access will be restricted by the use of temporary traffic lights. Please give your self a little more time when arriving for your round this week **
