Greetings golfers,
What a winner's circle this week….
There has been plenty to catch up on over the past week, with members and club teams winning here, there and everywhere!! Where do I start?
Well let's start with non-members news and what a last day of the Open Championship!! With just a 2 man race for the Claret Jug on the last day, these can sometimes be a bit of an anti-climax but Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickleson did not disappoint!! With throwbacks to 1977 and the dual in the sun; Stenson and Mickleson's usual swashbuckling style carried them through to record breaking levels!! It was fantastic to watch with scores of 63 and 65 - Mickleson must be wondering how he didn't win with a 65 on the final day, but Stenson's striking on the day was far superior and his 63 led him to his first, and long overdue, Major!
Leading on from that, thank you to all members who entered our Open sweepstake - member Ryan Burke was the main beneficiary in picking out Stenson and also Tyrell Hatton, who finished tied 5th.
Standings
1st - Ryan Burke (Henrik Stenson)
2nd - Darren Gorman (Phil Mickleson)
3rd - Steve Norwood (J B Holmes)
4th - Mick Ruman (Steve Stricker)
Tied 5th - Dave Page (Rory McIlroy), Anita McAleese (Sergio Garcia), Ryan Burke (Tyrell Hatton)
Vouchers will be in the post to you, and make sure you look out for our next one this weekend for the USPGA championship, which starts next Thursday 28th July!
Members go low at Club Championship
It's not only the Tour pros who went low this weekend - our annual Club Championship was held last weekend too and there were some fantastic scores for both eventual winners. On the first day Matt Derby had a first ever at the club - nett 59 during his first round!! An incredible achievement, which all but wrapped up the Nett Championship for him. And during the second day, seasoned member Brad Sarjantson came roaring through the field, shooting 71 gross (-1) to take his first ever Club Championship title! Another incredible performance from Brad in tricky, breezy conditions to shoot under par. Happy new handicaps to both of you!
In the Ladies Section, Jayne Ludlam won her 2nd Club Championship, with Louise O'Keeffe following up last year as gross winner and becoming the nett champion this time around!
Congratulations to all the winners over the weekend, and many thanks for your continued support in this event.
Team success….
Carrying on with the feel good factor, our Senior team and Handicap team have achieved fantastic results this week too…..
The handicap team managed to get through to the final of the Cockerill Cup this week by beating Ashton & Lea 4-1 at home, to book a 2 legged final date vs local rivals Blackpool Park in August. This follows on from a largely successful league season in which they were bitterly disappointed to lose their final game, ironically vs Ashton & Lea, to go from outside title contenders, to finish 3rd overall. Cup success would equate to a great season for the team. Good luck to the boys, and we will report back once the result is in!
The seniors team…….
The senior section had a fantastic week too, by winning the Annual Roy Whitehead Memorial Trophy at Blackpool North Shore. This is a 3 man event played by clubs from all around the Fylde and our "team" comprised of Club Captain Allen Artis along with Tony Williams and Dennis McCullough who won with a combined score of 111 points. And added to that, Allen also won the individual event, the Len Hall Memorial Trophy with an individual score of 42 points..
Well done team!
